Bodyboarding Shoots

Weather in Cornwall has been pretty awful last few weeks, so my free time has consisted of hitting the coast in the search of waves and good riding.

Last weekend I visited one of my favourite beaches, which is a semi secrete spot on the north coast of Cornwall. This spot produces some quality waves when you get deep low pressure storms coming right over Cornwall accompanies with south west winds. Managed to get good waves both Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend I travelled to the same spot again, waves where bigger then last weekend but not quite as clean. A few photography highlights from both weekends.

Night Photography

I'v been been fascinated for some time with the night sky and astronomy, long before I even embarked on photography. Something fascinating about looking at the night sky and is surprising how much you can see when you know where to look. I'm now looking at capturing this through my camera.

I have recently found two photographers that have given me some inspiration and techniques into what is possible with night photography.

The first is a photographer with the screen name of Dangerous Dave, you can view his flickr webpage here to see his work. He captures deep space images through a telescope and some of the sights he captures are quite amazing . Another photographer I'v been looking at is Ben Canales and you can see his work here , he captures images using a SLR camera and lenses in a landscape style.

I have now started a project which I will do for the rest of the winter on clear nights capturing the night sky and seeing what star scape's I can achieve. Below are a few example from the project so far.


Bodmin Moor. Travelled to the Moors last weekend with my friend Mairead, she's quite familiar with this part of the Moors and offered to drive me hear. She showed me this cool location where you have all these rocks piled on top of one another, not quite sure how they formed but there make for a fascinating foreground for the star scapes.

Crackington Haven

Crackinton Haven is one of my favourite area's to photograph in Cornwall and with the good weather I'v taken three trips down there in recent evenings. Asides from my tripod taking a quick swim on the first day I was generally happy with how the shoots went with a few keepers. Some example's below of what I captured.

Haryln Bay

Had a good surf at Harlyn Bay with Matty Allen and Richard Gotham. On the trip we checked two spots, one being Haryln and the other being Spot M. Both work well in similar swell and wind conditions but Haryln needs steep low tide banks to really work well and on this session it was firing on all cylinders.

Near the end of the session I swapped my camera for Matty's board, and he managed to capture this shot of me. I have vary few surf photos of myself and this is by far the best, cheers Matty.

Downderry Seascape Shoot

Downderry is a cool little coastal town about 20 minutes from where I live. It's a difficult place to photograph as there's no major focal point or landmark but sometimes I find the challenge of such places produce some great results.

I arrived an hour before sunset to find a good view point to photograph, unfortunately the tide was racing out fast constantly changing the the look at the waters edge so was a bit of a rush finding a half decent view point. Got a few shots but wasn't completely happy with them. A re-shoot will be in order soon.

Saltash Water Front

I decided to embark on project on my flickr website called 365. It consists of me taking and uploading one photograph for every day of the year to my gallery so that I have a documentation of my year in photographs. A few photographers I know have done this as a way to focus there photography and creativity so I thought I would give it a go and see if it can help me with my creativity.

These images where captured on the second day of the project. Saltash water front is one of the best photographic places in the town and you often get a lot of mist in the morning which can produce some great atmospheric conditions. Tried shooting down there few time but today rewarded some of the best results so far.
